Shirley Harris Obituary

"Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever." Psalm 23:6

Mrs. Shirley Campbell Harris was born on June 18, 1938 in Mullins, South Carolina to the late

Mr. Alton Campbell, and the late Mrs. Stacie Greene Campbell. She was the fifth born child of five children to this holy union. She departed her life to be with her Lord and Savior, on Saturday, November 24, 2018 at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence, South Carolina after an extended illness.

Shirley grew up in a loving Christian home in Mullins, South Carolina where she was introduced to God at an early age through her parents at the Old Field Baptist Church and later joined Mt. Carmel Missionary Baptist Church where she attended and faithfully provided financial support until her health declined.

Shirley attended the Marion County Public School System in Mullins along with her siblings: Dorothy; Bernice; Mazie; and Alton Junior. Like so many youth of her generation, she left home to go north to secure steady employment. To enhance her vocational skills, she received additional training in culinary arts through the Man Power Training Program of Newark, New Jersey. Later, she moved to Baltimore Maryland and worked as steam presser for several dry cleaning businesses. It was there where she met and married the love of her life, the late Robert Harris, on April 20, 1980. At the decline of her mother's health, she returned to Mullins, South Carolina to provide health care for her mother and to support her sister, Dorothy, along with her great nephew, Maximillian Parrish, in managing the home.

Shirley loved her family dearly. She gave of herself unselfishly. She provided comfort, shelter, and financial support, to the best of her ability, to her family during tumultuous times. She was the solid rock upon which they could all depend. Mrs. Harris was a very compassionate person. She related well with everyone, especially the under-privileged. She was a great counselor, was a good listener, and provided support to everyone in any way that she could. Mrs. Harris was also committed to community service. In 1976 she became an active member of the Palmetto Chapter Number 262 Order of the Eastern Star. She will be truly missed by all who knew her.

Three siblings preceded her in death: her sisters; Mazie Brown and Dorothy Campbell; and her brother, Alton Campbell, Junior.  She leaves to cherish her fond memories: one son; Mr. Clyton G. Campbell of Landover Hills, Maryland; one granddaughter; Danielle (Melvin, Senior) Smith of Fort Washington, D.C.; three grandsons; Justin (Asia) Campbell of Washington, D.C., Brent Campbell of Accokeek, Maryland, and Darian (his mother Audrey) Rembert of Mullins, South Carolina; one sister; Mrs. Bernice (the late Charley) Harley of Baltimore, Maryland; four great grandchildren; Kayla Campbell, Melvin Smith, Junior, Brooke Smith, and Taylor Campbell; nieces; Jacqueline (Joseph) Phillips of Thorndale, Pennsylvania, and Stacie Walker of Baltimore, Maryland; nephews; Thomas (Helen) Walker of Clinton, Maryland, Rev. Earnest (Peggy) Brown of Lexington, North Carolina and Michael (Marie) Walker of Florida; grandnephews; Andre Harley and Bernard Parrish of Thorndale, Pennsylvania, and a very special dedicated care-taker, Maximillian "Max" Parrish of the home; grandniece; Nicole Parrish of New Your City, New York and a host of other grandnieces, grandnephews, close relatives. Eastern Star sisters, church family members, and dear friends who have touched her life.
