One hundred years ago, Mary Lee Atkins Floyd was born to the late Willie and Corine Atkins in Bishopville, South Carolina. As a youth, she accepted the Lord and became a member of St. Mark Baptist Church.
Mother Mary was preceded in death by all of her 10 siblings and her beloved grandson, Darrell. On Tuesday, November 14, she quietly went to be with the Lord.
After arriving in Nichols, Mother Mary was joined in Holy matrimony to the late Neal Floyd. The Lord blessed them with one daughter, Dorothy. Mother Mary became a member of First Friendship Baptist church and served as a Senior Choir Member, an Usher, member of the Missionary, the Pastor’s Aide and children Sunday School Teacher. She used her God given talent to deliver God’s Word through singing as a member of the Gospel Travelers. She was also a member of Progressive Chapter 104, OES for over seventy years.
Mother Mary felt honored to serve as the Church Mother and she responded to the position with Christian humility.
Mother Mary’s memories will be cherished by her daughter, Dorothy (Charles) Johnson, Florence, South Carolina, her Attendant and “other daughter” Shelia Harlee, nieces, nephews, friends and others.
“Being guided by God’s loving hand,
she has gone upon a journey
to a distant, brighter land;
And although our hearts are heavy,
with the sorrow we must bear;
yet it helps to bring comfort
knowing she is happy there.”
