Janie M. Legette Mobley was called home to glory on Saturday, March 9, 2024. Surrounded by her loving family. She was born Janie Mae Legette on January 8th 1933 in Mullins, South Carolina to the late Walter Legette Sr. and Janie Grenwright Legette. Janie attended public school in Mullins, South Carolina and graduated from Palmetto High School. She then went on to further her education at Friendship College in Rock Hill, South Carolina, where she met the love of her life and married Gataroy Mobley Jr. They married on March 30, 1956 and moved to New York, where they started their career in government service. Through her career she worked in several different government agencies. She worked at Brooklyn Navy Yard, part-time at the Medical Examiner Office and V.A. Medical Center. Her co-workers were inspired by her unstoppable work ethic, integrity and devotion to her job. Going to work every day was her passion. She enjoyed what she did. Through all her challenges, she achieved her goal of receiving a higher education. She went to Hunter College and graduated in 1981, 1987, 1997, and 2003. She was an extraordinary mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She is a continued inspiration to all five (5) of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Janie participated in the Road Runners Club numerous half marathon’s with her children by her side. She was a lifetime member in Backs and Government since 1997.
Janie passes on her wisdom and loving memory to her five (5) children Jerrilynn, Dana Muriel, Jayne Marie, Gataroy III, and Marc David Mobley. Her grandchildren: Jason, Jacob, JoAnne, Brandon, Sherry, Brittany, Marc, and Jerimiah. Her great-grand children: Donte, Arianna, Michael, and Marc; her loving daughter-in-law Sharon Mobley and son-in-law Devon H. Williams. Daughters-in-law of Dana Engle: Sabree Mobley, and Candy Mobley. Son-in-law of Marc and Sharon Mobley: Joey Slowley. Her cherished memory of her sister: Elizabeth Green of Buffalo, New York. Her brother Frank Allen Legette from Atlanta, GA. Her dearly beloved co-workers and friends who were very dear and close to Janie throughout her career at the V.A.: Patricia Isadorac, Miriam Challenger, and Evalyn Arocho, Rosemary Wiecoreck, Joyce Jones (blacks in government), Sharon McDaniel, Nicholas Cassai, Bassit, and Isadora Quarles Sanderlin.
