Dorothy Elizabeth Campbell, neé James, 82, of Willingboro, NJ, passed away on June 15, 2023, after a long illness. Dorothy, affectionately known as “Dot”, was born on May 20, 1941 to the late Richard and the late Esther Smith James in Mullins, SC. The second eldest of nine children, she was a devoted older sister who helped to care for her younger siblings. She attended the Mullins public school system graduating from Palmetto High School. Upon graduation, Dot left Mullins and relocated to Philadelphia, PA with her childhood friends to begin her adult life. While residing in Philadelphia, she reunited with her high school sweetheart, Isaac “Sonny” Campbell and they later married in April 1965. Of this union, they had two children, Tammie Michelle and Isaac “Randy”. They raised their children in Brooklyn, while imparting strong Christian values tempered with practical, matter-of-fact advice that helped their children to become successful professionals. Dot was kind, generous and compassionate; she and Sonny maintained a welcoming home, open to family members as needed. When Dot and Sonny became empty nesters, they moved to Willingboro, NJ. They built a loving home that is remembered as the family hub for birthdays, holidays, and other family celebrations.
Dorothy enjoyed a long career with Citibank as a bank investigator until her retirement in 2001. Upon retirement, Dot enjoyed hobbies such as knitting, shopping and trips to the local casino. She loved to play gin rummy and was known to be a spirited competitor. She and Sonny would frequently travel south as Mullins was always home. They maintained a peaceful existence as retirees who were content and fulfilled with all they had accomplished.
Dot is predeceased by her loving husband, Isaac; her brothers, Alfred James, Ernest James, and Harry James, as well as her sisters, Estella Tyson and Betty Jo Hamilton.
She is survived by her children, Tammie (Victor) Campbell of Staten Island, NY, Randy (Sabine) Campbell of Laurel, MD; her cherished grandson, Jason Campbell, as well as John Anthony Gardner, who she referred to as a “bonus son.” Her brothers, Matthew (Miriam) James and Franklin James and her sister Queen Esther James, all of Brooklyn, NY; her brothers-in law Frank Hamilton and Alphonso Campbell, both of Mullins, SC; two sisters-in-law, Clara C. Marsh of Rock Spring, GA and Clara Mae Campbell of Mullins, SC; a very special friend from childhood Marjorie P.
