Egerton Bennett 99, of Summerville, South Carolina, formally of Mullins, South Carolina passed away Saturday, February 24, 2018 at Summerville, Medical Center in Summerville, SC.
Deacon Egerton Bennett was born on September 29, 1918 in Belmont, Kingston Jamaica to the late Hezekiah and Lelitia Scott Bennett. He was preceded in death by his wife Annie Mae Platt Bennett, three brothers: Uriah, Amos, Alva; three sisters: Alice Maude, Edna Ruby and Lynette. Also two step daughters: Winnie Mae King (Earl, deceased) and Mattie Rebecca Childs (Frank, deceased).
He was united in marriage to Annie Mae Platt Bennett in September 1971 until her passing in May 2006.
Deacon Bennett, while residing in Mullins, was a faithful member and Sunday School teacher at Mt. Olive Baptist Church for many years. In 2009, he moved to Summerville, South Carolina to live with stepdaughter and step son-in-law, Mattie Rebecca and Frank Childs. After their passing, he remained in the home with their daughter, Alexis Childs. While living in Summerville, he attended St. Paul Baptist Church in Charleston, SC on a regular basis, where he sometimes taught Sunday School.
Relocating from Jamaica in search of seasonal work as a laborer and horticulturist, had led him to various places including Mullins, which he made his home. He was employed by Southern Packaging and Schofield Furniture Company from which he retired in 1975. Deacon Bennett always enjoyed visiting with the sick and shut-in and giving words of encouragements. He also enjoyed gardening and sharing his produce with others.
Deacon Bennett is survived by his step-son, Dr. Randolph Platt (Shirley); step-granchildren: Charles Lewis (Deeadra), Dora Thomas (William), Sharon Wehner (John), Rita Lewis Smith (Barry), Christina Washington (Russell), and Alexis Childs; several nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.
